ASU Women’s Basketball: Columbia preview

Arizona Sate is set to face off against Columbia for the first time in school history in its second game of the ASU Classic. The Sun Devils are coming off a tough loss to a solid VCU team, and they are still looking for their first victory at home this season.  Columbia is also coming off of a loss to Toledo, who was 0-6 before their meeting.

The Sun Devils will still be without sophomore starting forwards Sophie Brunner (ankle) and Kelsey Moos (concussion). The Sun Devils struggled to find their offensive rhythm against VCU but will look to senior guard Katie Hempen – who was held scoreless against VCU – for on-court leadership and three point shooting. They will also rely heavily on freshmen Kianna Ibis and Charnea Chapman-Johnson to give them the edge on the offensive end.

Colombia comes into the game with a 5-2 record and will look to keep ASU winless at home.

Camille Zimmerman is the leading scorer for the Colombia Lions averaging a double double with 18.7 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game.  She scored 25 points against Toledo.

With eight players on its roster under 6 feet, Columbia is not a tall team. As a result, the Lions will take a lot of outside shots and not drive to the basket. The Sun Devils should make sure that they are locked down on perimeter defense.

Both ASU and Columbia play quick with a run-and-gun style offense. Both teams will rely on transition defense and quick scoring.

The game will be available to watch on the Pac-12 Digital Stream at 2:30 p.m.
