ASU Softball Blows Eight Run Lead To Arizona

No. 3 Arizona State traveled to Tucson on Friday night just two games back of conference leading Oregon and left a full three games back after a 10-9 walk-off loss to the unranked Arizona Wildcats.

Arizona had lost five straight coming into this year’s Territorial Cup matchup, but the southern rivals managed to erase an eight run deficit to hand the Sun Devils their eighth loss of the season and sixth in conference play.

ASU got off to hot start early, thanks in part to Arizona starter Shelby Babcock’s seven walks in the first three innings of the game. In the second inning, ASU had the bases loaded with two outs and they capitalized on an Alix Johnson two-run single that was followed up by Cheyenne Coyle’s 19th home run of this season to give the Sun Devils a 5-0 lead. The Sun Devils would extend their lead in the third to 8-0 after a three-run homer off the bat of Nikki Girard.

Sun Devils Pounce on Lady Bears Pitching All Weekend

After losing two of three to the Utah Utes last weekend, ASU Softball entered their series against California in desperate need of quality wins. Well, mission accomplished as the Sun Devils swept the No. 10 Golden Bears.

The Sun Devils top half of their lineup is among the nation’s best, which features Alix Johnson, Cheyenne Coyle, Amber Freeman, and Haley Steele. These four hitters had a great weekend against Cal as they scored 16 of the 26 runs. They also combined for six home runs on the weekend.

All four of these ladies also get on base consistently with Johnson having the lowest batting average of the four at .323. If the Sun Devils want to win a national championship, Johnson and company will have to keep having quality at-bats and keep the power going.

Two Costly Errors Cripple the Golden Bears

On Sunday afternoon, as temperatures continued to heat up near triple digits, the Sun Devil offense cooled off.

After scoring 21 runs in the first two games against No. 10 Cal, ASU needed some help from the Golden Bears defense to squeak out a 5-3 Victory at Farrington Stadium.

“When you get out hit and still win that means certain things are going on and we even did without a home run today,” Head Coach Clint Myers said.

Sun Devils Cruise To Mercy Rule Win

Despite losing two of three games against Utah last weekend in Salt Lake City, No. 5 Arizona State (40-7, 11-5) hit six home runs to lead the Sun Devils to a 10-2 victory over No. 10 California (35-10, 9-7). Alix Johnson and Cheyenne Coyle led off the game with back-to back home runs to give ASU the early 2-0 lead. Later in the inning Sam Parlich lined a ball over the left field fence for a grand slam giving ASU a 6-0 advantage after one inning. The Sun Devils never looked back. Parlich’s grand slam was the team’s fifth of the year. “It was pretty exciting,” Parlich said. “I think we had a great week of practice and we wanted to prove what a great team we are by coming out and being explosive.”
