Arizona State women’s soccer beat the Washington Huskies, 1-0, in their final home match of the season on Senior Day Sunday afternoon.

Nine seniors were honored before the match including student coach and former player Aly Moon, who was also surprised by her brother who has been serving in the military overseas since 2016.

It almost took the whole match for a side to break out. The 73rd minute was one every Sun Devil will remember as ASU forward, Christina Edwards, took a weak-footed shot and nailed it over the keeper into the top right corner from about 30 yards out to seal the win.

“I’m glad I could do it for the seniors,” Edwards said.

In the first half the ball never really seemed to go into neither team’s attacking third, as possession switch frequently. The half was so slow that the first corner didn’t come until the 35th minute, and both teams only had one shot on goal.

The second half was filled with more opportunities. Counter attacks were coming from both sides, but neither were able to execute until Christina Edwards’ goal in the 73rd minute.

The goal allowed the Sun Devils to play conservative for the rest of the match and keep their score.

“We adjusted the system for the last 10 or 15 minutes, and we were definitely playing a more defensive set up,” Winkworth explained. “I was pleased that we were able to hold on for sure.”

It was no doubt an emotional game for the senior and their families and teammates, but one that ended on the right note for Arizona State.

The Sun Devils last match of the season will be on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Tucson against the University of Arizona in the annual Territorial Cup.
