The Arizona State Sun Devils lost to No. 1 UCLA, 3-0 this Thursday as they tried to put their 6-0 loss to No. 2 Stanford behind them.
ASU started the game with more energy and confidence than it did against Stanford. The Sun Devils were able to put pressure on UCLA’s defense early and often. The Bruin’s offense however, kept up with the Sun Devils and were able produce a few attacks of their own.
The back and forth did not last, as UCLA slowly began to shine with their pace and physicality against ASU. The Bruins clearly had speed and strength in their favor, as their runs and tackling in the attacking third lead them to break away with the game.
The first goal came in the 19th minute from UCLA forward Hailie Mace. A few ASU defenders were not able to complete the tackle on her as she took the ball just inside the box and took a powerful low shot into the corner. She scored the second goal for the Bruins as well from a penalty caused by an Angela Boyle handball.
The second half was no different, UCLA used its athleticism and physicality to win and keep possession throughout. ASU’s offense also slowed down in the second half, as the Bruins got better in reading the Sun Devils passes as the game went by.
Even though ASU came out strong, UCLA was overall the better team throughout the game.
Still having an unpleasant recollection of the Stanford game, ASU head coach Graham Winkworth expressed his satisfaction with his team’s heart and enthusiasm.
“I’m really happy with our girls efforts, and they can hold their heads high because they didn’t quit and that’s what I’m most proud of today.”
Overall the team was disappointed with the loss, but proud of the fight they felt they didn’t put up Sunday.
ASU goes on to play No. 6 USC in Tempe this Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
